Tax

Overview

The Tax section is a specialist team within the Finance Professional Services Group based at University House. The aim of the Team is to provide support to the University in achieving its strategic objects and ensuring ongoing operational efficiency.

There are two strands to this support:

  • establishing where available tax efficient methods of delivering the University’s activities resulting in cost savings or cost mitigation, or otherwise advising on the tax costs and considerations of those activities while
  • ensuring the University is compliant with all UK and relevant International Tax laws and regulations. Noncompliance can result in unexpected and unbudgeted costs and create reputational damage to the University.

Specifically, the team works closely with departments across the University:

  • providing advice on the tax implications of new ventures or activities both in the UK and overseas.
  • advising on the Customs duty and VAT aspects of all movements of goods across the UK border.
  • supporting the expenses team on HR on PAYE and NIC related matters.
  • supporting the IWG team within HR on tax and social security obligations of global mobility.
  • advising on and approving arrangements under the IR35 - off-payroll working rules.
  • advising (or when necessary, procures advice) on all other relevant taxes.
  • completing and submitting the Group’s VAT and corporation tax returns for registrations in the UK and Overseas.
  • providing training and guidance on Tax matters across the University as required.
