Open Access Funds

Gold Open Access makes research available to readers without any cost, but this route often results in costs that are charged to the author. While there are ways to avoid these costs, like the use of Read and Publish Agreements, sometimes additional funding is needed to pay the Open Access fees, often called article processing charges or APCs. A variety of funding sources are available, as detailed below, though the use of these funds are restricted to set criteria.

Journal Articles

UKRI Block Grant

Each year, the University receives funding from UKRI to support the publishing of the outcomes of research they have funded. This funding is managed by the Open Research Team in the Library, who ensure we meet the criteria set out by UKRI and help research with the payment of the APCs.

Eligibility

Authors: The author must have received UKRI funding (from any UKRI Research Council, Research England or Innovate UK) that is acknowledged in the paper, including the specific grant code.

Publications: The fund will support journal articles published in fully Open Access journals (i.e. journals that only publish Open Access articles), and conference papers published in a journal, conference proceeding with an ISSN number, or a publishing platform.

Policy Compliance: The publisher must permit a CC BY licence to be applied to the final published version and otherwise comply with the UKRI Open Access policy.

Costs

Funds can be claimed to cover Article Processing Charges (or APCs) and any associated VAT or administration fees. It will not cover any further costs, such as submission costs, excess page charges or colour charges. There are no caps on the amount of funds that can claimed, though the amount of funding issued to the university is limited, and will be monitored by the Open Research Team.

Wellcome Trust Block Grant

Each year, the University receives funding from the Wellcome Trust to support the publishing of the outcomes of research they have funded. This funding is managed by the Open Research Team in the Library, who ensure we meet the criteria set out by Wellcome and help research with the payment of the APCs.

Eligibility

Authors: The author must have received Wellcome Trust funding that is acknowledged in the paper, including the specific grant code.

Publications: The fund will support original research articles published in fully open access journals or platforms indexed in the Directory of Open Access JournalsLink opens in a new window.

Policy Compliance: The publisher must permit a CC BY licence to be applied to the final published version and otherwise comply with the Wellcome Trust Open Access policy.

NIHR Open Access Funding

NIHR Open Access Funds

NIHR make funds available to support the publication of the outputs of research it funds.

Eligibility

Authors: The author must have received NIHR funding that is acknowledged in the paper, including the specific grant code. The NIHR funding must be ongoing or have been within two years of completion. If the funding ended more than two years ago but within five years of completion, authors may request an exception.

Publications: The fund will support any peer-reviewed articles within scope of the Open Access policy, i.e. all peer-reviewed research articles, including reviews not commissioned by publishers and conference papers

Policy Compliance: The publisher must permit a CC BY licence to be applied to the final published version and otherwise comply with the NIHR Open Access policy.

Where appropriate: Transitional agreements or publishing discounts should be utilised, and eligible APC costs should be split with other research funders, in line with the funders' relative contributions to the research described in the publication.

If successful, any funding provided to support Open Access publications will be paid direct to the institution that holds the NIHR funding award, in line with other costs paid under the contract.

Library Open Access fund

Books, Chapters and Edited Collections

UKRI Longform Funding

UKRI has introduced a dedicated £3.5 million fund to support open access costs for long-form publications within scope of their longform publications policy. This funding can be requested by the Open Research Team in the Library for any eligible author.

Eligibility

Authors: The author must have received UKRI funding (from any UKRI Research Council, Research England or Innovate UK) that is acknowledged in the paper, including the specific grant code.

Publications: The fund will support books, edited collections and book chapters, though it will not support delayed Open Access (i.e. paying to make work Open Access after it has already been published).

Policy Compliance: The publisher should permit a CC BY licence to be applied to the final published version and otherwise comply with the UKRI Open Access policy.

Costs

Funds can be claimed to cover Open Access costs (known as Book Processing Charges, BPCs, or Chapter Processing Charges, CPCs) and any associated VAT or administration fees.

Unlike the UKRI Block Grant, there are caps in place for this funding. Request cannot exceed £10,000 (including VAT) for entire monographs/ edited collections or £1,000 (including VAT) for Book Chapters.

Up to £2,000 can be claimed (within the above caps) for costs associated with acquiring permissions for third party materials. Any further costs, such as submission costs, excess page charges or colour charges, cannot be claimed.

How to apply

Applications for funding has two stages:

Stage 1: Pre-publication, the author must register their publication with UKRI via the Library to confirm eligibility for the fund. To do this, simply fill out the Open Access funding form, and a member of the Open Research Team will be in touch to confirm.

Stage 2: Once the publication has been published, evidence that the work has been published Open Access is supplied to UKRI, who will then reimburse the University for the cost of the BPC/CPC.

Wellcome Trust Longform Funding

Wellcome Trust have introduced new funding to support open access costs for long-form publications within scope of their longform publications policy. This funding is not handled by the Open Research team and must be requested directly from Wellcome Trust.

Eligibility

Authors: The author must have received Wellcome Trust funding that is acknowledged in the paper, including the specific grant code.

Publications: The fund will support monographs and book chapters.

Policy Compliance: The publisher should permit a CC BY licence to be applied to the final published version and otherwise comply with the Wellcome Trust Open Access policy.

Costs

Funds can be claimed to cover Open Access costs (known as Book Processing Charges, BPCs, or Chapter Processing Charges, CPCs) and any associated VAT or administration fees, though any further costs, such as submission costs, excess page charges or colour charges, cannot be claimed.
