Distance Learners

As a distance learning student you can take advantage of the following resources and services to help you get the most out of the Library.

Accessing electronic resources

The Library grants you access to a huge number of electronic resources including e-journals and e-books. As a University of Warwick student you are entitled to access these resources wherever you are in the world. Electronic resources can be found by searching Library Search or browsing by subject or type.

  • When searching Library Search you can limit your results to display electronic resources only. Use the filters in the left-hand column to select 'e-book' from the 'format' menu or e-resources from the 'collections' menu

To access most of these resources you will be required to log in using your Warwick username and password. Using links from Library Search and the Library website you will always be prompted for this.

If you don’t know your Warwick username and password or have problems with your account please contact IT Services at [[/email] or find help on their website.

Using print resources at a distance

When borrowing books at a distance, please be aware that books should be returned by the due date or your library account will be blocked. Books can be renewed online for another loan period provided no-one else has requested them.

If another Library customer requires a Standard Loan book that you have borrowed, they can recall it at any time. You will be notified by an email sent to your Warwick email account if any of your books have been recalled. You will not be able to renew books that have been recalled and they must be returned to the Library within 7 days.

Books may be posted back to the Library with an explanatory note.

Postal Loan service

If you live in the UK or Ireland you can use our postal loans service to request to have Standard Loan books sent to you. (Please note: there is a charge for this service).

Photocopying service

We are also able to provide a photocopying service for book chapters and journal articles if they are part of our current library stock.

Help in your subject

If you require additional help in your subject please contact your Academic Support Librarian. They will be happy to correspond with you via email or can even set up a Skype session if this is the best way to address your query.

Using other libraries

You are able to join the SCONUL Access scheme, which will allow you to visit other participating University Libraries in the UK and Ireland.

International students

Welcome, especially to new students and those on pre-sessional courses. Library staff will do everything they can to make your experience of studying at Warwick successful.

  • This is an “open access” library, which means that you will need to go to the shelves yourself to find books. You can also issue books to yourself and return them our self-service machines
  • It’s free to borrow books and access electronic resources provided by the Library
  • We will send any messages to you to your Warwick email address so make sure you check this and login to your Library account regularly

Top tips

  • Learn to use the library early on, our Get Started pages are a great starting point. Plan ahead so that you have time to solve any problems you come across
  • Make use of the training we provide and don't be afraid to ask for help. Ask a member of the Helpdesk team or email library at warwick dot ac dot uk if you need assistance. Academic support librarians offer specialist advice for research and study in your specific subject area
  • Ask your lecturers for advice about which items on reading lists are essential. If your lecturers tell you that you will need a textbook throughout your course or module, we'd suggest buying a copy
  • You will be expected to find information for yourself and to read around the subject rather than rely on one or two core textbooks
  • Make sure that you know how to refer correctly to other people's publications in your own work and avoid plagiarism
