Student Feedback Survey in Term 1, 2024-2025: Results
The Student Feedback Survey is one of our regular large-scale student surveys undertaken in the first and third terms of every year, with over 3,000 responses for Term 1 of the 2024/25 academic year.
The results
The survey included questions about support, connections, and awareness of and engagement with key SU services, alongside questions on careers and attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). We have included key findings below:
- 92% of students agreed they ‘feel safe at University and they feel ‘respected by staff’, an increase of 2% from this time last year for both statements.
- 79% feel that they belong at the University, while 76% feel they belong in their department. Both of these results are consistent with this time last year.
- While those that feel a sense of community and sense of support have remained consistent, those that feel they have a support network at university has increased by 4% pts compared to Term 1 2023/24.
- Looking at the University’s Wellbeing Support Services, 77% stated that they are aware of the services available for mental health/wellbeing support. Additionally six in ten respondents stated that they were aware of the Report and Support system, and the Community Safety Team.
- 73% of students who responded agreed they are ‘satisfied with the SU at my University’. This is consistent with results seen in Term 1 2023/24.
- Approximately five in ten students who responded (48%) are worried about financial circumstances while at University, and 58% are worried about financial circumstances after University. Both of these have fallen since last year (down from 58% and 66% respectively).
Results have been shared with departments outlining the survey results for their individual department. Alongside this, AI specific results have been debriefed further and shared. We are currently in the process of sharing careers results.
Special topics
During this iteration of the survey, the topics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage and the student careers services were explored further with some interesting insights gained:
- Two thirds of respondents stated that they had used AI tools at least once in their lives. Of these that had used AI tools, two thirds report using them in their general, everyday life, and using them to enhance their understanding of difficult topics or concepts.
- Of those that have never used AI tools, over half believe that relying on AI could diminish their skills and that they don’t trust AI to provide accurate or unbiased information.
- While further concerns have been raised around the overreliance on AI, there is also an acknowledgment that AI can enhance the efficiency of research and academic work as well as help level the playing field for students with learning difficulties or language barriers.
- In regards to post-graduation plans the majority of students were interested in looking for permanent employment in the UK, primarily driven by home students. Overseas students were most likely to be interested in pursuing further education in the UK or looking for employment in the UK with a sponsored skilled worker visa. Respondents were most likely to be interested in Research and Financial and Insurance Activities roles, followed by roles in Education and Engineering sectors.
- Of those looking to work abroad following graduation, the lead destinations were the USA (17%), Germany (12%), France (11%), Canada (10%), Australia (9%), and Singapore (8%).
