The clocks are going back
At Warwick, our priority is ensuring you get to enjoy all that University life has to offer, whilst feeling safe and secure.
Whether you're enjoying a night out with friends, or walking back from an evening lecture, here are some reminders to help keep you keep safe at all times, but especially during the winter months. Read on for more information on the support available to you.
Clocks going back:
In the UK, daylight savings means that the clocks go back by 1 hour at 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in October. This year, this will take place on the 27 October and will mean nights become darker, earlier. It’s helpful to remain aware as we adjust to the change in season and our surroundings.
Plan your route:
Check the weather forecast to help you plan your day ahead and the best travel options for you, both on and off campus.
Our campus is a safe place with well-lit paths for pedestrians but we’re always keen to make improvements. If there is an area of campus where you feel lighting could be improved, do get in touch with our Community Safety Team by emailing community.safety@warwick.ac.uk.
When you’re travelling off campus, keep to well-lit, populated areas where you can.
If you tend to wear noise cancelling headphones, consider changing the settings so you can still hear your surroundings whilst you’re out and about.
If you're cycling, please wear a helmet, use lights on your bike, and avoid dark clothing when cycling at night.
Look after each other:
Keep in mind that your friends may be affected differently in darker, colder conditions, so it's a good idea to check in on each another and keep in touch.
This might look like:
- Letting your friends know when you are going out, your planned route and when you're likely to return.
- Staying in groups where possible and making sure everyone leaves together.
- Utilising WhatsApp and other location sharing apps. Whether it's for those you live with, or those you are going on a night out with, this means you can easily make contact.
- Trying to avoid solo travel. If someone does need to travel alone, consider travelling with a licensed taxi service.
