I look after myself more because of what I learnt
Name: Emma Goodfellow
Course: BA (Hons) Social Work (Degree Apprenticeship)
There's a degree of commitment from myself doing the Apprenticeship course – it’s been hard work doing additional hours outside university and working full-time. But I've gained a lot of more knowledge than I expected. Working in the social care system has just enabled me to put theory to practice quickly, so I feel that I've developed my skills loads.
The course also makes me a reflective person in my personal life. It's a course that makes me think about things from different perspectives and analyse certain things, so I feel that I've grown in my professional life, but also in my personal life. Now I don't seem to take things at face value and start to question everything in a way that can be constructive.
The extra bonus from doing the course is that it helps me look after myself at work as well, since we've learnt a lot about burnout at work, long hours and self-management in class. I've learned to take a step back myself and accept that I can't do it all, to avoid getting burnouts so soon.
This is quite a new course at the beginning when I joined, and I can see that as the years have gone on and now we're in year three, how much more established the course is, and how more well-known it's become.
