Transformations

What is Transformations?

It’s a widening participation programme where tutor teams visit local secondary schools to provide after-school creative writing lessons.

The programme starts at the beginning of term 1 with runs up until the end of term 2

Transformations is open to any student — UG or PG — whose home department is English

Why should you join Transformations?

Transformations is a wonderful opportunity to gain teaching, editing, and publishing experience. Regardless of whether you want to be a teacher or not, you gain a wide range of marketable skills from being involved in Transformations that would look great on your CV. There are multiple chances to gain leadership. Additionally, you get the chance to build a mentor-like relationship with the students at the school you are assigned to, so Transformations provides a great opportunity to be a positive role model.

What does it entail?

Once a week, you will go out to schools in tutor teams of 3 - 5 people and provide an hour-long, seminar-style lesson on a topic of your choosing.

The theme of each lesson will be focused on the specific reader/genre your team has been assigned.

There are four readers: Dystopian, Gothic, Witches and Voices - the focus is on teaching the key features of each genre. How you approach it and whatever creative writing styles you teach is flexible and up to you!

We aim to encourage reading, discussion and creative responses from the students as Transformations strives to enable pupils to work creatively, outside of the confines of rigid academic work
