Workshop: Medical Testing, Past and Present

Location: University of Warwick (in person only)

Medical testing has been in the news recently, but it also has a long history that bears on the present. This workshop brings together a range of researchers at the University of Warwick with expertise on the history of medical testing, including the testing of people as well as substances. Talks will cover the ancient, early modern and modern periods, right up to the twenty-first century, and will include perspectives from Classics, Sociology, and the Life Sciences as well as History. The workshop is part of the visit by Samir Boumediene (University of Lyon) to Warwick as an IAS Fernandes Fellow.

Garnet test

Medieval test for the authenticity of garnet.

True garnet was thought to ward off wasps and flies.
