Widening Participation

We’re committed to ensuring that students from all backgrounds can thrive in the History Department.

There is a dedicated university Widening Participation and Social Mobility team, as well as departmental initiatives like the History Widening Participation Student Network. Our work encompasses all stages of the student lifecycle and ensures that there is support available throughout your time at Warwick.

What do we mean by Widening Participation?

Our aim in history is to ensure that university is accessible to everyone. However, there is dedicated support available within the university if you identify as widening participation e.g. if you are from the UK/Home fee status and self-identify with at least one of the following:

  • Be eligible for or in receipt of Free School Meals in secondary school
  • Come from a low socio-economic background where the household income is below £42,875
  • Have a household postcode in an area with a high level of deprivation (IMD Quintile 1)
  • Come from an area of low progression rates to higher education
  • Have spent time in local authority care, either in a foster home, residential children's home, or kinship care
  • Have caring responsibilities - this includes physical, practical or emotional care
  • Estranged from, and not supported by, both of their parents (this includes birth, step or adoptive parents, and sometimes wider family members)
  • Have a disability
  • Are in receipt of a Warwick Bursary or other means tested financial support
  • Are a mature student who started university over the age of 21
  • Neither parent attended university and gained a degree - excluding if they were/are a mature student

Students who have been granted refugee status, are under humanitarian protection or are currently seeking asylum in the UK are also considered to be from a WP background.
