Just to follow up on a comment that was raised in last week's seminar on supernatural deviance. It is highly probable that the association between werewolves and the fullmoon came from the association with mental instability. Madness was often referred to as lunacy and the fullmoon was a believed to be a cause of instanity, hence the term 'lunacy'. I think that this was an idea that gained more currency in the later part of our period, when understandings of the causes of lyncanthropy came to be associated with mental illness rather than physical transformation. But madness was still understood as an early cause, because of the power of the devil to delude.
