Week 14: Seeds of Resistance: 1857-1901
This week introduces our third and final unit. The lecture will provide essential context on thow resistance strategies (and British counterinsurgency) evolved in the second half of the nineteenth century.
As this unit is the most explicitly transnational on the course, we will also spend some time discussing the benefits, drawbacks, and challenges of global comparative histories.
Seminar Questions:
1) How did the construction of race transform during the late nineteenth century, and how did this transform Britain's approach to colonial governance?
2) How did Indigenous communities resist the expansion of the British Empire in the late nineteenth century?
3) What are the benefits and drawbacks of engaging in global, comparative history?
