News Reading

  • News reading will be an integral part of our class discussions. Whenever a relevant news item related to Taiwan or China–Taiwan relations arises, the tutor will email it to students by Wednesday as part of the weekly reading list. These articles will typically be no longer than 2,000 words.

  • In class, we will analyse the news from a historian’s perspective, examining its historical context and implications. Students are also encouraged to send the tutor any recent news items they find interesting and would like to discuss, even if those are not part of the tutor’s selection.

  • This exercise is intended to help you draw meaningful connections between historical study and current affairs, while also preparing you for essay writing and sharpening your critical analysis skills.

  • We will read and discuss news items for at least five weeks, after which we will review whether we wish to continue.
