Introductory Session, 13 October 2025


Join us in person in FAB5.01 for the first WIP session of the 2025/2026 academic year, to be held on Monday, 13 October 2025 at 5–6.30pm.

During this introductory session we’ll catch up with returning PGs, welcome new additions to the community, and discuss what research everyone got up to over the summer. All postgraduates are encouraged to attend and share their work, no matter how unfinished, and any and all ideas and suggestions for future topics and speakers are welcome!

2nd-year PhD Evie Nash will discuss her ongoing research in her talk, 'The Use of the Vagrancy Laws Against Quakers in Devon, 1656'. This hybrid session will be held in person in FAB5.01. The WIP co-conveners will also be holding an informal social at Varsity following the event - all members of the PG community are welcome to attend!

2nd-year PhD Shreya Khaund will discuss her ongoing research in her talk, 'Rituals of Rupture: Seismic Events and Sacred Geographies in Assam, c.1850'. This hybrid session will be held in person in FAB5.01. The WIP co-conveners will also be holding an informal social at Varsity following the event - all postgrads are welcome to attend!

2nd-year PhD Anna Bruins will discuss her ongoing research in her talk, '(Un)settled: Experiencing, Evaluating, and Extracting Indian Ocean Nature with Issac Johannes Lamotius (c.1646-1718)'. 4th-year PhD Mia Edwards will discuss her ongoing research in her talk, '"Are we MEN?" Physicality, Physical Disability, and Masculinity in Nineteenth-Century Anti-Slavery Texts'. This hybrid session will be held in person in FAB5.01. The WIP co-conveners will also be holding an informal social at Varsity following the event!

Visiting PGR Nina Opgen-Rhein will discuss her research in her talk, 'Policing the Provinces: Common Informers and the Community in Late Eighteenth-Century England'. This hybrid session will be held in person in FAB5.01. This event will be followed at ~7pm by a dinner at Panda Mami - all PGT and PGR students welcome!

Professor Penny Roberts will discuss her recent book project in her talk, 'Letters in a Basket of Cheese: Uncovering a Secret European Network'. This hybrid session will be held in person in OC1.02. This event will be followed at by an informal postgraduate social at Varsity - all PGT and PGR students welcome!
