Finalist Referencing Quiz

This quiz is designed to reiterate some of the key points about referencing, each of which will help your work demonstrate good academic practice. This is a cornerstone of academic writing and a key part of your degree. There are some trickier and more unusual references here that should hopefully help you build on your existing referencing skills. You are also welcome, and indeed encouraged, to take previous year quizzes if you would like a refresher, and you can take the quiz as many times as you like!

To make it (slightly) more interesting it is themed around self-described ‘Black, lesbian, feminist, socialist, mother, warrior, poet’ Audre Lorde. One of Lorde’s poems contains the line ‘I am deliberate and afraid of nothing’ - hopefully after this quiz you referencing will be deliberate and you will be afraid of nothing (footnoted related)!

1. The key to good footnoting is:

2. Where can you go for help with referencing and good academic practice? (select all that apply)

3. Guidance is that you can use any footnoting style provided it is an established format, you are consistent with it, and you use footnotes not in-text references. This is great if you are comfortable with a particular style from previous experience and studies. However, the department does have a preferred style that we advise you use if you don’t already have a preference, called:

4. Audre Lorde’s poignant poem Blackstudies has been reprinted in various places since its inception in 1974. How would you footnote it if consulting it within this edition of the Journal of International Women’s Studies? Poem linked here

5. Lorde’s writings span many genres, forms, and decades, and some were unpublished in her lifetime. These writings have since been edited and published, leading to a slightly tricky referencing scenario. As with other references though, once you break it down it becomes clear. With that in mind, how would you correctly footnote this book? Book linked here

6. Lorde’s political, social, and cultural, impact have been written about in numerous contexts. This includes fellow student dissertations and theses. Referencing these pieces of literature is different to formally published work in a few important ways. How would you include this thesis in a bibliography? Thesis linked here

7. Aside from being a prolific author, poet, essayist, and speaker, Lorde was an avid letter writer. Here is a letter that she wrote to Barbara Christian in 1986. How would you go about including this primary source in a bibliography? Letter linked here

8. Audre Lorde’s poem ‘A Litany for Survival’ is one of her best known works. In 1996 it was also used as the title of a documentary feature about her life. If you were referencing this film how would you format your footnote? Film linked here

9. As historians our pool of sources is always developing and social media is a great example of this. Here a tweet from musician SZA, quoting Audre Lorde in reflecting on a TV interview, gives us a chance to consider the legacy and impact of Lorde’s work. For extended writing projects, such as dissertations, you will likely come across many similar sources or places sources are found. With that in mind, how would you footnote this tweet? Tweet linked here

10. Footnoting is not just about what goes in the footer of your page but also how the body looks. This means ensuring footnote numbers are in the right place and doing the right job! Choose the correct way to use footnotes below: (select all that apply)
