MA for Research in Italian Studies (P-R3P3)

RECRUITMENT FOR THIS COURSE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

This MA course is designed to enable you to develop your research skills and interests. It is intended for students who wish to deepen their understanding of existing areas of interest, for students who wish to discover new areas of interest and for students intending to go on to PhD study. This course can be followed over one year (full-time) or two years (part-time).


  • Study with our nationally and internationally renowned experts:
    • Take two Advanced Study Option modules: tailor your own bespoke programme of study in consultation with one of our expert tutors. To find experts on your own areas of interest search here.
    • Or take just one Advanced Study Option module and one of our MA option modules.
  • Develop your research skills with a core module introducing you to using electronic resources, creating bibliographies, writing a literature review, writing a PhD proposal and applying for funding, selecting a Dissertation topic and giving oral presentations of your work.
  • Discover new theoretical approaches and methods in the Critical Theory in Modern Languages core module.
  • Research and write a 20,000-word Dissertation.

Course structure (full-time) and assessment

Term 1
  • Advanced Study Option 1 [5000-word essay, due in January]
  • Critical Theory in Modern Languages [5000-word essay, due in January]
  • Research Skills in Modern Languages (continues into Term 2)
Term 2
  • Research Skills in Modern Languages (continuation) [Study Skills portfolio, due in February]
  • Advanced Study Option 2 or MA option module [5000-word essay, due in May]
Term 3 and summer vacation
  • 20,000-word Dissertation [due in September]

Entry requirements

To be eligible to apply you will need:

  • A strong undergraduate single or combined Honours degree in Italian Studies, Class 2i or First, or equivalent. If you are currently in your Final Year of an undergraduate degree you may still apply now: we can issue offers conditional on a satisfactory degree result.
  • One academic reference confirming your achievements and suitability for this course.

How you will learn

Experts from across the School's four academic languages collaborate to teach the core critical theory and research skills modules. We encourage interdisciplinary teaching or supervision within and outside Modern Languages through optional taught modules, Advanced Study Options, and your Dissertation. Advanced Study Options enable you to pursue individual research pathways with the guidance of a tutor before undertaking your Dissertation.
