Module Description
This intermediate-year module builds on the first-year ab-initio French language module (FR102) in the French Studies section of the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. It develops students' language acquisition in French, extends their linguistic skills through translation, writing, reading, speaking and listening activities. The module prepares students for final-year study (FR301) and will further develop students' awareness of French and Francophone culture.
FR202 is a combination of LL255 French Intermediate Accelerated (3h) and 2h of French language teaching for SMLC French ab-initio students.
In this module, you will work towards B2+ standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference).
By the end of the module, you should be able to:
- develop language-learning strategies;
- analyse and discuss ideas in complex texts, and produce written material on a wide range of topics;
- build and develop translation, writing and grammar skills, register awareness and vocabulary acquisition, both general and specialised.
Listening, speaking as well as reading and writing activities will be supported by a variety of authentic written and spoken material focusing on aspects of life and culture in French-speaking countries in addition to topical issues.
We will cover items such as: Origins/family/social relations, employment, consumer society, the French language, the Media and the news, the environment, France and the French, travel and adventure, health and fitness, the Arts, technology, tomorrow's world.
Assessment Method:
Term 1 – Grammar Test with Targeted Translation (15%)
Term 2 – Grammar Test with Targeted Translation (15%)
Term 3 – Oral examination (20%) + combined writing and translation paper (50%)
