Module Description
- This module is available to exchange students whose first language is Italian. Exchange students whose first language is NOT Italian should choose, if available, other language modules in Italian, depending on their level.
- This module is available to exchange students staying at Warwick for one teaching Term only. It can be taken in either the Autumn or the Spring Term. Students coming to Warwick for the Spring and Summer Term can take it in the Spring Term.
- The module is NOT available to Students coming to Warwick for both the Autumn and Spring Term, or the full year. Full-year or T1-T2 students should select IT301-30 or IT401-30 instead - they will attend the translation hours of these modules and complete the relevant assessment for this component (2-hour exam) + the IT338-15 or IT414-15 assignments (see below 'Assessment)
- The module is NOT available in the summer term only.
Module Aims
This 15-CATS module aims to refine language and translation skills at:
- B2/C1 level (IT338-15) - for exchange students this normally corresponds to language skills to be acquired in their second or third year of UG studies
- C1/C2 level (IT414-15) - for exchange students this normally corresponds to language skills to be acquired in their final year of UG studies (Y3) or in their postgraduate years
Students taking IT338-15 attend the translation hour of IT301-30 for one term.
Students taking IT414-15 attend the translation hour of IT401-30 for one term.

The classes alternate between translation from Italian into English and from English into Italian, in which speakers of English work together with native speakers of Italian to produce weekly translations. By completing translations from/to English, students will consolidate and further enhance their command of vocabulary, grammar, syntax in English at an upper intermediate level (IT338) or advanced level (IT414); the module will consider a range of text types, including literary texts, and in IT414 will pay particular attention to concepts of register and style.
Through translation practice in class and regular formative tasks, seminar discussion, and assessed translation portfolios, students will also have the opportunity to explore techniques for conveying nuances of meaning and strategies for translating culturally specific terms. This will allow them to reflect on the process of translation, and gain a deeper understanding of the close interaction between cultural and linguistic aspects.
Teaching Delivery
The teaching delivery in 2024/25 will be in-person weekly classes with formative work submitted via Tabula.
- The weekly activities will include a variety of tasks, including short translations to be completed individually and in groups to enhance peer discussion and feedback.
- Tutors will provide individual feedback on student set formative submissions, as well as group feedback for other activities.
- No textbook is required, all course materials will be available on Moodle.
