Dr Aijan SharshenovaLink opens in a new window, IGSD Research Fellow (SHAPEDEM-EULink opens in a new window Project team), presented her co-authored research project on the prospects of introducing carbon pricing as a climate change mitigation mechanism in the Kyrgyz Republic, a developing landlocked nation in Central Asia. Dr. Sharshenova partnered with environmental economist and Harvard University Fellow Dr. Rahat SabyrbekovLink opens in a new window to develop this policy-relevant study. The 8th CAREC Think Tank Development Forum "The climate challenge: Thinking beyond borders for collective action" brought together researchers, international financial institutions and national policy makers to discuss practical solutions to climate change in Asia.

Prof. Elena Korosteleva has been invited to be a Board Member of the Scientific Council in preparation for the COP29 Presidency by Azerbaijan. As part of the Board's remit, the scientists will work on the agenda, ideas and recommendations for COP29. The 1st meeting took place on Friday, 26 July 2024, and involved 30 members from the international Scientific Community. Members were addressed by H.E. Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate, Minister of Energy and Dr Elnur Soltanov, CEO of COP29, & Deputy Minister of Energy in Azerbaijan. The meeting was hosted by ADA University, its Rector Ambassador Hafiz Pashaeyev, Rector, and Dr Fariz Ismailzade, Vice Rector.

The meeting discussed key challenges and issues for COP29, to shape the agenda as well as the activities for side events at COP29. The next meeting is scheduled for September 2024.

IGSD Research Fellow Dr. Aijan SharshenovaLink opens in a new window (SHAPEDEM-EULink opens in a new window project) gave a keynote speech at the “Research and Higher Education in Central Asia and the Caucasus” SymposiumLink opens in a new window organised by the Volkswagen FoundationLink opens in a new window in Hannover, Germany on June 10-12, 2024. The Volkswagen Foundation is a private research funding organisation, which supports education and research worldwide. The Symposium took the stock of the 25 years of the Foundation's Central Asia and Caucasus portfolio.

Dr. Sharshenova delivered a keynote speech on making an academic career in Central Asia offering her insights and recommendations to early career researchers from the region. Dr. Sharshenova is a former recipient of the Volkswagen Foundation's research grant.

During their visit, His Excellency Ravshan Usmanov, Deputy Head of MIssion Suhrob Vaseev, and 3rd Secretary, Jasur Valiev met with Professor ELena Korosteleva, IGSD Director, to discuss opportunities for further collaboration with the Universities of Uzbekistan, and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in particular. This was a follow-up talk after Elena's visit to the country in 2023, and fruitful discussions with a range of Universities there, as well as the Agency for Innovation and Development, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. The delegaton, during their visit, also toured the world-class facilities offered bin Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG); discussed teacher-training and intercultural training for students and professionals with the School of Education, Learning and Communication Sciences (SELCS); and explored opportunities in hospitality education with our partners, the University College Birmingham. SHAPEDEM-EU organised an online expert discussion to explore the root causes and future implications of the ongoing mass protests in Georgia against the adoption of the "foreign agents" law. The discussion took place on May 10th via zoom and was open to the public.
