Choosing your external modules

Each year you'll be able to take modules from the Liberal Arts Department or from other departments across the University. These optional modules comprise your route or your pathway. You may take a module from any department in the University that can offer you a place.

A good place to start when considering your optional modules is the University's Module Catalogue where you can find a full list of all modules.

Please note, not all modules will necessarily be running each year. The most up-to-date information will be on department webpages (please see links to these pages below). The availability of places on external modules is not guaranteed (unless these are part of your route), may change from year to year, and is ultimately determined by the external department. Pay close attention to pre-requisites for your external modules.

Additionally, please note that you cannot take 100-level modules in year 2, and cannot take 200-level modules in year 3/final year. You are, however, permitted to take 300-level modules in Year 2.

A reminder of your course structure

Year One

• 60 CATS of core modules with the Liberal Arts Department;
  
  • IP101 - Principles and Praxis
  • IP121 - Truth and Misinformation (30 CATS)
  • IP120 - Beauty OR IP122- Revolution (15 CATS)
  • IP108 - Qualitative OR IP110 - Quantitative Research Methods (15 CATS)
• 60 CATS from the Liberal Arts Department or another department(s) within the University.

For academic advice on choosing your optional module(s), you will have a meeting with your personal tutor in Welcome Week. We will also run a module registration breakfast where you can obtain further advice.

Year Two and Final Year

For each of these years, you will register for a total of 120 CATS. These will be composed of:

• 60 CATS of core modules with the Liberal Arts Department;
  • Consuming Cultures (30 CATS - Year 2)
  • Dissertation (30 CATS - Final Year)
• 45 CATS of Liberal Arts Optional Modules;
  • You can choose when you take these (as long as you take 45 CATS between both years)
• 135 CATS of modules from your chosen Disciplinary Route or Specialist Interest pathway
  • Requirements will differ according to your disciplinary route
  • Most routes require you to take 30 CATS per year within the particular discipline

Route prerequisites

You will be asked to declare your route/pathway towards the end of the first year at our route/pathway declaration event (in the middle of Term 2). Please bear in mind that to follow some routes, you will be required to study certain modules in your first year to be able to continue taking that route in your second year. For some routes, there will also be requirements in your second and final years.

Registering for your optional modules

1. You must gain your personal tutor's permission prior to registering for your optional modules. Usually this will involve an email with your personal tutor approving that they are happy for you to take these modules. We also recommend that you obtain written permission from the department offering the optional module (if they are not part of your route).
2. Pre-register for your optional modules with the external department. Each department has a different process for registering your interest in their modules.
3. Once a department has confirmed you can take their module, you must register all your modules online via e-MR (eVision Module Registration). e-MR usually opens in late September/the start of term. You must be enrolled in order to register your modules. You will also need your IT Services account details in order to access e-MR.
