Available Projects
The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.
Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.
Identifying fibrillation areas via modelling heterogeneous tissue to facilitate ventricular tachycardia ablation
The project aims to develop a framework to model the dynamics of heterogeneous tissue using multivariate electrogram signals. The developed framework should be integrated into the existing surgical procedure. The project ultimately aims to improve patient outcomes.
Primary supervisor: Igor Khovanov - I.Khovanov@warwick.ac.uk
Project detail:
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) accounts for approximately 15-20% of reported deaths in the UK. Those most affected by SCA are people with structural and functional abnormalities of the heart tissue. Scarring of the heart muscle, predominantly from previous heart attacks or other inherited and acquired conditions, forms abnormal, heterogeneous tissue that can trigger life-threatening heart rhythms, namely Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). Catheter ablation can treat VT and has been shown to significantly reduce VT recurrence rates. The procedure includes mapping the heart tissue by measuring electrograms and identifying areas of abnormal tissue. This task is challenging and typically requires unique medical expertise and additional time-consuming manipulations.
The project aims to develop a framework for modelling the dynamics of heterogeneous tissue utilising multivariate electrogram signals. The developed framework should be integrated into the existing surgical procedure. The ultimate purpose of the project is to improve outcomes for patients.
The project will be run in close collaboration with the Heart Rhythm Research group led by Professor Dhanjal from the Warwick Medical School. This medical group routinely performs catheter ablation procedures at the University Hospital Coventry.
Please contact Dr Khovanov for further details.
The project is suitable for applicants with a degree in engineering, mathematics and physics.
