Available Projects
The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.
Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.
Experimental Fluid Mechanics
Projects in experimental fluid mechanics are offered. The projects can include a computational and/or theoretical component. I supervise projects in most areas of fluid mechanics. The exact project area is normally decided upon after discussion with potential applicants, and depending on their particular interests.
Primary supervisor: Peter J. Thomas - P.J.Thomas@warwick.ac.uk
Co-supervisor: T.B.A.
Project detail:
I am offering PhD projects based primarily in experimental research. However, I have often teamed up with other academics to perform studies combining experimental, computational and theoretical research in the general area of fluid mechanics.
Many of my previous PhD projects involved flows subject to background system rotation. The Coriolis forces acting on fluids in motion fundamentally alter the flow dynamics in comparison to the non-rotating, equivalent flow. The Coriolis forces lead to many highly counter-intuitive effects. This makes the area of rotating flows a very exciting research area.
However, I am also offering projects in most other areas of fluid mechanics, including jets, turbulence, boundary-layers, drops, particle-laden flows, granular flows and many other areas.
If you have own ideas for projects I am happy to discuss with you if the project is suitable and whether we have the equipment to conduct the required research.
