Available Projects
The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.
Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.
Batteries without the "forever chemicals"
Almost every lithium-ion battery is held together by PVDF, a 'forever chemical' processed in a toxic solvent, and regulators are closing in. Can we build better batteries without it? In this PhD you will design, process and test PFAS-free, water-processable binders for high-energy cathodes, and work out why some binders succeed where others fail. Polymer science, electrode engineering and electrochemistry, with a clear route to industry.
Primary supervisor: Dr Volkan Degirmenci - V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk
Project detail:
The binder is a tiny fraction of a battery electrode, yet it decides whether the cathode holds together, conducts properly and survives hundreds of cycles. In this project you will develop new fluorine-free binder chemistries, formulate and coat NMC cathodes, and build and test coin and pouch cells, linking binder structure to adhesion, slurry behaviour and long-term degradation. You will also explore 'recyclable by design': can a binder be removed cleanly at end of life? The project sits within an active battery-materials group with collaborators in Warwick Chemistry and WMG.
Specific eligibility requirements:
A first-class or strong 2:1 degree (or Master's) in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry or a related subject. Experience with polymers or electrochemistry is welcome but not essential.
Informal enquiries are very welcome: please email V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk.
