Distributed Machine Learning for Collaborative Robotics

How can a team of robots learn, reason, and collaborate intelligently when communication is unreliable, bandwidth is limited, and computing resources are constrained? Distributed machine learning is enabling fleets of robots to share knowledge, coordinate decisions, and accomplish complex tasks without relying on a centralised AI system.

Primary supervisor: Zhenhui Yuan - Zhenhui.Yuan@warwick.ac.uk

Project detail:
Effective collaborative robotics requires machine learning models that can operate efficiently across distributed robotic platforms while accounting for communication constraints, heterogeneous computing resources, and dynamic environments. This PhD will investigate how to jointly design communication-aware machine learning models, inference strategies, and deployment frameworks to enable real-time, intelligent collaboration among robots.

Potential topics include:
Developing communication-aware inference strategies that balance model accuracy, communication overhead, and real-time response requirements.

Designing distributed machine learning models that adapt to network conditions, computing capabilities, and the complementary sensing capabilities of different robots.

Creating adaptive deployment frameworks that distribute AI inference and computation across robots and edge servers to support scalable, resilient collaboration.

This interdisciplinary project sits at the intersection of distributed AI, wireless networking, and collaborative robotics, offering opportunities to experiment with multi-robot systems for search and rescue, autonomous exploration, and intelligent robotic assistance in challenging environments.
