Available Projects
The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.
Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.
Learning from nature to drive on Mars
How do you drive a rover on Mars, where sand is loose, gravity is weak and nobody can come and push? Nature has already solved similar problems: the textured skins and surfaces of animals manage grip and flow remarkably well. In this PhD you will design, 3D-print and test bio-inspired surface patterns, measuring how they control friction, traction and drag, and translate the best into wheel and surface concepts for planetary exploration.
Primary supervisor: Dr Volkan Degirmenci - V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk
Project detail:
Sharks, lizards and beetles all use carefully patterned surfaces to control how they interact with fluids and granular ground. You will take inspiration from these designs, turn them into engineered patterns, manufacture them by 3D printing, and test them in controlled flow and traction experiments, including in granular media that mimic Martian soil. The aim is to work out which features matter, and why, so they can be designed into rover wheels and other surfaces that must grip without getting stuck.
Specific eligibility requirements:
A first-class or strong 2:1 degree (or Master's) in mechanical, aerospace or chemical engineering, physics or a related subject. Hands-on experimental skills are a real advantage.
Informal enquiries are very welcome: please email V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk.
