Available Projects

The project list below helps self-funded and externally sponsored applicants (scholarship) connect with a prospective supervisor.

Applications are welcome from those who can support themselves or have funding already arranged. Such applications will go through the same level of academic assessment. Please see the fee arrangementsLink opens in a new window for PGR students.

Printing with molecules: 3D architectures from metal-organic frameworks

What if we could print materials molecule by molecule? Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline 'molecular scaffolds' with enormous internal surface areas and tunable chemistry. In this PhD you will develop inks and printing routes, from inkjet to 3D printing, to turn MOFs into functional architectures for energy, sensing and electronics, and learn how molecular design translates into real device performance.

Primary supervisor: Dr Volkan Degirmenci - V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk

Project detail:
MOFs are usually made as fine powders: great in a flask, awkward in a device. This project bridges that gap. You will design MOF inks and print them as thin films, patterns and 3D structures, controlling the architecture from the molecular level up, and then test how printed structure affects performance in applications such as electrocatalysis, gas sensing or charge transport. Expect a mix of synthesis, additive manufacturing and materials characterisation, and the satisfaction of designing a material on paper and holding it in your hand.

Specific eligibility requirements:
A first-class or strong 2:1 degree (or Master's) in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics or mechanical engineering.

Informal enquiries are very welcome: please email V.Degirmenci@warwick.ac.uk.
