Pedagogical Research

Teaching Interests

I am interested in HOW we teach science. What are the barriers people face when trying to understand science and furthermore, what are the barriers to students trying to achieve top class grades at university? I am currently working on a project trying to address the attainment gap seen across the Higher Education sector and how we can unpick this and find ways to prevent differences in grades awarded to students based upon factors often beyond their control.

I love to teach science communication – it is GREAT to research all kinds of scientific topic, but if we as scientists can not pass that knowledge on and share our discoveries with the wider audiences, both in science and beyond, then we limit the use of our discoveries.

Research Interests and Other Activities

I like to research the use of different teaching techniques and pedagogical methods. This may be something as simple as trying out a new app for a revision quiz or looking at lecture engagement. It may however be a bigger change like converting the format of a “lecture” to being more workshop activity-based teaching to provide the opportunity for skills to develop rather than just have content delivered to students to remember for an exam.

Other activities I enjoy being a part of here at the University of Warwick is my work with the Equality Diversity & Inclusion Committee (EDIC). I am an active member of the outreach task force and have contributed to the running of different events including a national workshop to help develop inclusive learning environments in HE and as a panel of women in science for students in further education.

I do love to get involved in outreach events, be these assisting with big national biology competitions like the British Biology Olympiad, running Lab Experience Days or going to primary schools to enthuse 4 year olds about science. I enjoy the opportunity to share my passion for science with others and hopefully inspire some people along the way
