WP3: Patients

Patient and public perspective- analysis and exploration of views about the implementation and sustainability of actions to decarbonise general practice.

The third WP focuses on understanding patients’ views about the need for general practice to undertake actions that support decarbonisation and the potential consequences of such actions. It takes place in the same 12 practices participating in WP2.2 and is comprised of two parts: an online patient survey, and in-depth interviews with patients to explore views about the implementation of actions to decarbonise general practice, with particular attention to where such actions may affect the provision of care and/or health inequalities.

WP3.1: Patient survey

A brief, <10-minute survey was disseminated to a random sample of patients at the 12 participating WP2.2 practices. A survey invitation letter was shared with patients, and the survey could be accessed via web link or a QR code, and a phone number was provided for those requiring a paper copy or translation. In order to reach under served populations, we contacted local community and/or faith groups to seek permission to invite members who live in the vicinity of a case study site to participate.

Survey dissemination began in November 2024 and is ongoing. A final question asked participants to express their interest in taking part in an interview.

WP3.2: Patient interviews

Interviews are underway with participants recruited from the WP3.1 patient survey to gather an in-depth understanding of patient views on the implementation of decarbonisation actions in general practice. To encourage participation, those taking part in an interview receive a £25 voucher. Interviews are held via phone or MS Teams (depending on participant's preference).

Data analysis

Data analysis is currently underway for both the patient survey and interviews. Framework analysis is being used for WP3 interview data, the same method as has been used for WP2.2 data from case study sites.

Presentations and publications

Findings from the patient survey will be presented at the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) conference in July 2025.
