Participant information

Work Package 1

In this work package we want to find out about the experiences and views of people who are involved in the ReSPECT process.

We will work with 12 GP practices and 24 care homes across three areas of England to invite people to be interviewed for the study.

Patients in each practice who have had a ReSPECT form completed in the previous six months will be invited to take part in an interview through the GP practice. If a patient is unable to participate because they lack capacity we will invite their relative or primary carer to participate. When a patient or their relative express an interest in taking part a researcher will contact them with more information and seek their consent.

This may include paramedics, emergency department clinicians, and home care workers.

Surveys:
To explore the views of the wider public and General Practitioners about the use of Emergency Care Treatment Plans we will commission two external organisations to include questions about emergency care treatment plans in existing national surveys.

For the public: a series of questions exploring people’s views on emergency care treatment plans will be included in the British Social Attitudes Survey that is run by the National Centre for Social ResearchLink opens in a new window annually.

For GPs: a series of questions about their use of and views on Emergency Care Treatment Plans will be included in a regular online survey of GPs run by the company medeConnectLink opens in a new window

Work Package 3

In this work package we will collect Information from the GP record of patients who have had a ReSPECT form completed in the previous 12 months in each of the 12 participating practices. These patients or relatives acting on behalf of the patient will be able to opt out of their medical notes being used in the study. Everyone affected will receive a leaflet explaining this part of the study and how to opt out. Information will be collected by general practice staff or researchers with permission to do so. Information will only include things that are relevant to the study. Anything that could identify an individual will be removed before the information is securely sent to the university team who will analyse the information. This will be carried out under legal regulation (section 251 of the Health Service (Control of Patient Information) Regulations 2002) with approval from the Health Research Authority Confidentiality Advisory Group

Work Package 4

In this work package we will invite people with experience of living with a learning disability to take part in a series of five online workshops. In the workshops a facilitator from CHANGE and a member of the study team will work with the group to find out about their views on emergency care treatment plans and ReSPECT. In the first workshop we will spend time explaining what ReSPECT is and how it works at the moment. During the workshops the groups will develop recommendations and materials that can be used to help people with learning disability and health care professionals to use the ReSPECT process. We will also invite carers of people with a learning disability to take part in a focus group to discuss their views on emergency care treatment plans and ReSPECT. People do not have to know anything about ReSPECT to take part in the focus groups. Information about ReSPECT will be provided for the discussion.
