Aims and Learning Outcomes
Gain a through theoretical grounding in the management of common presentations of back pain, through analysis and interpretation of evidence of effectiveness of diagnosis and initial treatment.
This will contribute to the broader aim to influence clinicians to use a critical and scientifically robust approach to planning patient care. Students will have on-going access to other professionals during the period of the module in order to facilitate their learning.

- Demonstrate a thorough theoretical knowledge of the anatomy, biomechanics and pathophysiology of common disease affecting the spine and back
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the epidemiology of back pain
- Illustrate the socioeconomic effects of back pain
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the diagnostic and treatment modalities available for their management
- Demonstrate the ability to explain common musculoskeletal disease of the back and its management
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with other healthcare professionals to facilitate interdisciplinary teamworking
- Demonstrate the ability to use critical appraisal skills
- Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and use different sources of evidence appropriately
