Reprogenetics: the intersection of science, society and law
This module offers an opportunity for students to delve into the wider socio-legal and ethical implications of science, in particular genetic reproductive technologies. The fundamental questions addressed include how the law is regulating science and technology and how, to some extent, science and technology are also influencing the law. This module will be suitable for students who are interested in how science might influence policy and/or for those who are simply fascinated by the ethical, social, and legal issues that come with employing new science in human reproduction.
By the end of the module you should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between science, society, and law by drawing upon genetics and reproduction as an example.

Explore the impact of genetics on reproduction and the fundamental concepts that have informed legal thinking in modern reproduction

Identify and analyse ethical and socio-legal issues in the use of science, with a particular focus on genetics and reproductive technologies

Develop skills to communicate science and its relevant ethical and/or socio-legal issues to lay audiences.

Critically discuss how public debate and policy have been framed in the context of genetics and reproduction.
