WLS Alumna Bience Gawanas appointed as new Chancellor
The Namibian lawyer, diplomat and social justice advocate Bience Gawanas (LLB Law, 1986) has been appointed as our new Chancellor. Discover more about Bience, a former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and a Warwick alumna.
Warwick Law School welcomes new Visiting Fellow
Warwick Law School welcomes IAS Visiting Fellow Dr Basani Baloyi from the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) in South Africa to our community. She will be working with us until 25 October this year. Whilst at Warwick, Dr Baloyi will be based at the Centre for Law, Regulation and Governance of the Global Economy (GLOBE).
Warwick Law School welcomes new Visiting Fellow
Warwick Law School welcomes IAS Visiting Fellow Prof Waheeda Amien from the University of Cape Town to our community. She will be working with us until 6 November this year. Whilst at Warwick, Professor Amien will be collaborating with Dr Rajnaara Akhtar on mutual research interests, and a potential funding application.

Prior to joining Warwick, Svitlana Lebedenko was a Hauser Fellow at the New York University School of Law’s Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy and a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.
Corporate governance for sustainability: Law paper hits top 10 list
The paper on Corporate Governance for Sustainability, coauthored by Professor Andrew Johnston of Warwick Law School and the Cambridge Centre for Business Research, was originally published in 2020, but has recently entered the SSRN all-time top 10 lists for Climate Change Law and Policy, and Sustainability Law and Policy. The Statement has had a major impact on the debate over the future of corporate governance.
Successful ‘Conversations and Coffee’ project returns for its second year
Following its success last year, the Conversation and Coffee project returns for a second year and is looking for new volunteers. The collaborative venture seeks to create an informal space where student volunteers and local community members can come together over free coffee and cake, to practise and improve English speaking, build connections, and foster intercultural awareness.

The University of Warwick has further cemented its position as one of the UK’s best universities - after being shortlisted for University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025.
Professor Shaheen Ali awarded Honorary Doctorate
Warwick Law School’s Professor Shaheen Ali has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the University of Oslo which she received during a graduation ceremony held at the University on 2 September this year.
School Tasking shortlisted for Times Higher Education (THE) Award
The University of Warwick has been named a finalist for a prestigious award. Dr Ali Struthers’ School Tasking scheme has been shortlisted for ‘Widening Participation or Outreach Initiative of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
Professor Ana Aliverti elected to the Academy of Social Sciences
Congratulations to Warwick Law School’s Professor Ana Aliverti, who has recently been appointed as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
The Academy’s Fellowship welcomes 45 new leading social scientists this autumn. All elected for their excellence in their fields and substantial contributions to social science for public interest.
