In response to the recent changes to the Disabled Student Allowances the University will be offering some assistance from the academic year 2016/17 in the form of a subsidy to students who require ensuite on-campus accommodation on disabilty grounds. This process will be separate to the on-campus priority accommodation support offered to students with disabilities. Students who are supported for priority on-campus ensuite accommodation will not be automatically eligible for the subsidy and will still be required to apply.
The subsidy will also not be awarded automatically to students with disclosed disabilities who are in ensuite on-campus accommodation. Applications will be considered monthly through the course of the academic year in accordance with the criteria below and accompanying supporting evidence. Students can apply at any stage during the academic year and if successful the subsidy will be awarded for the entire length of their accommodation contract for that academic year. If students move into ensuite on-campus accommodation later in the year the subsidy will be awarded pro rata to the number of weeks they have been occupying the ensuite room.
The subsidy is calculated based on the difference between a standard room with shared facilities on campus and a standard room with ensuite facilities. Please note that for certain blocks, such as Claycroft that are not ensuite blocks as such but only offer a small number of ensuite accessible rooms the subsidy is calculated based on a comparable shared facilities block.
Students who are eligible, will be awarded the subsidy retrospectively, termly, as credit on their student account. If students are experiencing any financial hardship due to the retrospective nature of the subsidy and are unable to cover their accommodation fees whilst they are applying for the subsidy, they are encouraged to contact Disability Services at firstname.lastname@example.org who can liaise with student finance to discuss how to best support them.
Undergraduate, postgraduate Home, EU and International students are all eligible to apply as long as their requirement for ensuite on-campus accommodation is disability related, based on the criteria below. Students who are supported by resident carers for personal care assistance will be able to apply for the subsidy for their accommodation as well as that of their carers.
Personal convenience or preference do not form part of the eligibilty criteria and will not be considered. Students will only be eligible if they meet one or more of the following criteria:
1. A requirement for ensuite on campus accommodation as a result of a physical disability i.e. mobility difficulty/wheelchair user, where specific accessibility requirements prevent the student from sharing bathroom facilities with others.
2. A requirement for ensuite on campus accommodation as a result of a sensory disability e.g. visual impairment, that prevents the student from maintaining independence when sharing bathroom facilities because other students impact on the accessibility or usability of the shared space.
3. A requirement for ensuite on campus accommodation as a result of an unseen condition such as a mental health disability, ASD or a medical condition that prevents the student from using shared bathroom facilities without a substantial impact on their wellbeing and ability to carry out self-care activities.
4. Exceptional cases where a requirement for ensuite accommodation is considered appropriate by senior Wellbeing Services staff, based on independent evidence of ongoing difficulties that substantially impact on the student’s ability to use shared bathroom facilities.
If you meet one or more of the above criteria please complete the application form and attach appropriate supporting evidence. If you require assistance with your application please contact Disability Services at email@example.com. The information and evidence submitted during the application stage will only be used for the purposes of the subsidy and will be treated confidentially by the Panel and members of Wellbeing Support Services.
You will be notified via email of the outcome of your application. If you have been unsuccessful in your application and you have additional supporting evidence that has not been previously considered you can re apply for the subsidy. The Ensuite On-Campus Accommodation Subsidy process and policy is in line with the University's Student Feedback and Complaints Procedure.
