Materials Engineering Centre (2018)

The Materials Engineering Centre (MEC) is a fast-track new build project that took just 18 months from inception to completion in October 2018.

The MEC has created more research space for applications-driven, “engineering scale” research into multi-materials and hybrid structures. This will open up new collaborative opportunities with our business partners, bringing benefits to the local economy.

The MEC will be a key facility for the Global Research Priority in Materials and will contribute to the Energy, Innovative Manufacturing and Sustainable Cities priorities. It will support WMG in their Research Technology Platforms objective to provide a significant increase in research infrastructure.

Features of the MEC include:

  • Will host cutting-edge materials research
  • Equipped with advanced moulding equipment and robots
  • Features a double height 850m2 engineering hall, plus laboratories, workshops, staff and teaching space totalling 2,200m2 on three floors.
  • A building for research, teaching, industry training and events
The largest proportion of the funding for this £10m+ project is from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
