Creating Bookmarks for your Reading List
Once you have installed the bookmarking extension and your reading list is set up, you are ready to add bookmarks to it.
You can collect a range of items from Library Search, online databases, publisher sites, and around the web using the Bookmarking Extension.
Below are some examples of common material types you may wish to bookmark.
As a best practice, we recommend searching the Library Catalogue for resources in the first instance:
- From Library Search, search for a book you wish to add to your list.
- Once you have located the correct item in the search results, press the Talis Bookmarking Extension button (this should be an aquamarine coloured circle you have pinned to the direct right of your browser's address bar).
- A hyperlink reading Bookmark to reading list should now appear next to each catalogue entry in the search results. Some entries may even show this hyperlink twice if the catalogue record is a combined entry for an item which the Library holds in both print and e-book format. Click the hyperlink which appears next to the resource you would like to add to your list or bookmarks.
- Your screen will now show you a preview of the bookmark as it would appear if you were to add it to a reading list.
- Quickly review the details showing in the item metadata for accuracy, particularly resource type. These should be accurate and detailed as the information is pulled from the metadata of the item's catalogue record. You may amend any details as needed by pressing the Edit Resource button.
- Press Save in my Bookmarks if the metadata is correct, which will save the item in your My Bookmarks section.
- You can add the item to your reading list right away from the next screen by using the Add to List feature on the right-hand side of the page. Search for your list and press Add to List.
- From this page, you can set the importance of the item, the position on the list where you would like it to appear, and leave any Notes the Library or your students.
- Once you press Finish the bookmark will be save to your chosen reading list. (If you already have the list open in a separate tab or window, the newly added item won't appear until you refresh the list.)
Saved bookmarks can also be added to a reading list directly from the list itself.
- Hover your cursor between items on your list to bring up the Action Bar and select Add Resource.
- This brings up a window of all your recently created bookmarks which can immediately be added.
- Press Add to list, select the reading importance for the item, and it will then appear on your reading list.
Both methods of adding bookmarks to your list work equally well, so it's really up to you which method you prefer!
This feature allows you to direct your students to a specific chapter or section of a book, without having to include this information in the Note for Student field (but you can still use the note field if you prefer!).
- First create a bookmark for the whole book, as above.
- From the bookmark preview screen, click the Edit Resource button which will allow you to change the item's metadata.
- To add a chapter to the bookmark, on the right-hand side of the page, select the button Part, Article, Chapter, etc. from the list of fields. This will add a chapter section to the metadata.
- You can now add the title of the chapter or extract, and any other details you would like from the selection of fields to the right.
- Be sure to click Save in my Bookmarks at the bottom of the page to update the bookmark with the chapter details.
As with bookmarks for whole books, chapter bookmarks can be added to your reading list straight away from the next screen by using the Add to List feature on the right-hand side of the page, or from the list itself via the Action Bar and Add Resource option.

Articles can also be bookmarked to directly from the resource:
- Locate the desired article, and simply click the Talis extension button to create the bookmark. The same process can be used to bookmark webpages, or indeed anything that is publicly accessible online, including newspaper reports, videos, and podcasts.
- Please note that the metadata for a webpage will be relatively simple, often only containing the name of the page and a link.
- Please also note that the captured resource type may vary from ‘webpage’ – if, for example, you have linked a YouTube video, Talis will often recognise that it is an ‘audio-visual document’. If you wish to amend this, you can do so by clicking ‘Edit resource’ and choosing the appropriate resource type from the drop-down menu.
- As before, press Save in my Bookmarks if the metadata is correct, which will save the item in your My Bookmarks section.
-
Just like with books, journals or articles, you can add the item to your reading list right away from the next screen by using the Add to List feature on the right-hand side of the page. Search for your list and press Add to List.
-
Alternately, saved bookmarks can also be added to a reading list directly from the list itself. Hover your cursor between items on your list to bring up the Action Bar and select Add Resource.
