Marie Jefsioutine is Assistant Professor in the Counselling and Psychotherapy department teaching on the BA Counselling and the Psychotherapeutic Relationship. She is a member of the Centre for Lifelong Learning Wellbeing Group and the Medical School Health, Wellbeing and Professionalism Group.
Marie is a qualified Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor, registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and has been in practice for over 20 years in a variety of settings including mental health support, hospice and bereavement counselling, and domestic violence and abuse agencies. She currently runs a private counselling and supervision practice.
Marie’s background began in Experimental Psychology, and Artificial Intelligence, working in psycholinguistic research and speech and language technology (when that was a new concept) in both academia and industry. A twisting path took her to multi-media design at the BBC, educational technology and usability research in academia, and resulted in an eclectic collection of qualifications, experience and publications. A parallel part-time and voluntary career in youth and community work, working with young offenders and community arts fed an interest in the impact of inequality, oppression and social injustice, which ultimately brought her to counselling and psychotherapy practice and to teaching within the context of lifelong, accessible learning.
Marie is rekindling her involvement in research and is open to collaboration, with interests in social justice, anti-discriminatory teaching and practice, widening participation in education and research, and creative learning and research methods. She has a particular interest in the added ‘rippling’ value of lifelong education and personal development.
Marie is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Person-Centred Association.
