Oliver Stallard

Name: Oliver
Course: BA(Hons) Social Work Degree Apprenticeship

When I was accepted onto the degree was before COVID and the subsequent lockdowns. The start date of the course was delayed and our entire first year was conducted online via virtual learning. As COVID restrictions lifted, we were introduced to hybrid learning and this continued throughout year 2 and year 3. It was great when we finally got to spend time on campus, with my peers and also meet the teaching staff in person.

What did you find the most challenging, and how did you overcome them to finish your study?

As it is a degree apprenticeship, combining both work and studies was hard and often meant working or studying in evenings and weekends. Having peer support from fellow students and also having teaching staff available helped me a great deal, alongside supportive colleagues at work. However, I couldn't have done it without the support of my wife and my son who encouraged me and at times, put up with me.

A favourite moment in your study?

I think just getting to the end of the course after going through the End Point Assessment. Following lots of hard work in studies and also managing in a rewarding, but emotionally demanding job. Handing in the last assignment, completing the last exam and the last presentation was a real sense of achievement.

What are you doing now that you have graduated? Has your study supported that?

My apprenticeship has been sponsored by Worcestershire Children First on this course. Something which I am extremely grateful for and will now enable me to move into a role as a Social Worker within safeguarding services.

If there is one piece of advice you’d give to current students at CLL, what would it be?

Probably don't listen to my advice...!

However, access the support available at University, whether this is tutor's, teaching staff, fellow students and family and friends. You can do this on your own, but having people in your corner encouraging and supporting you helps.
