Aims
The aim of this module is to develop understanding of literature review, research questions and research methods necessary to complete a small-scale research project.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of literature review, research questions, research methods and ethics.
  • Critically evaluate and interpret a range of literature, research methods and ethics.
  • Creatively integrate and apply the knowledge listed above in the negotiation and conduct of a small-scale research project.
  • Present material in clear written form by identifying, analysing and applying key texts and practices using appropriate and adequate structure, spelling, grammar, syntax, length and referencing.

Outline syllabus

  • Consideration of participants’ prior research experience.
  • Comparing and contrasting a range of academic, professional and popular texts.
  • Analysing and interpreting the similarities and differences between research methods from a range of discipline areas.
  • Comparing and contrasting examples of research in career development, coaching and work-related learning.
  • Conducting a critical and evaluative literature review.
  • Constructing research questions.
  • Designing a research strategy and detailed methods.
  • Ethics and values in relation to research in this field.
  • Use of the above to negotiate and complete a small-scale research project.

Summary of teaching
Individual supervision supported by a research workshop, VLE-based distance learning and a module reading pack. The workshop is advertised twice a year in the AGCAS training calendar as Research Workshop. The first part of the module is focused on helping students write a research proposal. There is no requirement to have developed a clear research idea before enrolling on the module.
 
Module timing and duration
Usually, this module runs twice a year. Part time students are allowed 5 months to complete.

Summative assessment
The assignment consists of a 5000 word project (100%). Typically, the project is focused on a topic of your choice and includes an initial literature review, research questions, methodology and findings.
