• Safeguarding - Childhood and Domestic Abuse - Speaker Dr Christine Harrison
  Understanding the impact of domestic violence on children is important for any professional working with children, including those in early years. This workshop will review the range of impacts that domestic violence has on children within a developmental context, and incorporate the perspectives of mothers and children. It will consider diversity and the impact of additional factors such as poverty or racism, as well as highlighting sources of resilience. It draw will draw on the experiences of participants to explore the professional implications and the requirements of safeguarding.
  
• Inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disability - Speaker Dr Caroline Jones
  This workshop will explore the understandings of the term 'special' educational needs and the impact of official labels on values, attitudes and practices. Case study and AV material will be used to investigate the notion of inclusion and inclusive practices within a variety of professional contexts. The role of early years practitioners in implementing the principles of the new Code of Practice on Special Educational Needs and Disability SEND) (DoH/DfE 2015) will also be discussed.

  The inspector will draw on recent examples from inspections of early years and childminder settings including an insight from Debbie Castle, Manager of the University of Warwick's nursery, recently graded as outstanding by Ofsted
