Identity and Inclusivity in Research and Clinical Practice with Marginalised Groups

This lecture focuses upon identity and inclusivity in research and clinical practice with a focus on three populations: lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people; ethnic minority people; and people living with HIV. A series of qualitative and quantitative empirical studies focusing on the psychological impacts of various stressors, such as stigma and self-stigma, which are commonly experienced by members of these groups are outlined. Identity process theory from social psychology is offered as a theoretical framework for understanding identity, experience and coping in these populations. The potential value of tenets of identity process theory for psychotherapeutic approaches is outlined. In particular, there is a focus upon the significance of identity resilience in those facing, or at risk of, identity threat. The implications of social psychological research for clinical practice are considered with a particular focus on how to engage and retain in clinical care, and effectively support, people from marginalised communities.
