The most important aspect of the course is self-reflection and personal development

Name: Jordan
Course: BA (Hons) Person-Centred Counselling and the Psychotherapeutic Relationship (Part-Time)

I have found that during my working career I have always been drawn to employment that offers a service to those who need extra support through personal circumstances. The thought of becoming a counsellor seemed like an unachievable task, I often felt that I wouldn’t be able to find the time or even qualify due to me being away from education for such a long time.

During the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, time seemed to slow down and gave me some time to reflect. I found the course at the University of Warwick and decided I was going to apply and see what happened.

I can honestly say, joining the course has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life so far. There is a magnificent blend of practical learning through counselling practice, theory and, I think the most important aspect of the course, self-reflection and personal development.

Prior to joining, I had experienced a series of bereavements. The course contributed to giving me the confidence of exploring and sharing my experience by delivering a Ted Talk hosted by Tedx Warwick which can be viewed on YouTube.

Going to university, sharing and reflecting with my fellow students and tutors is a highlight of my week now. You can leave the day feeling drained as the course demands so much from you, but deep down you know it is so worth it. To become a qualified counsellor, I believe is a great privilege, the years of learning and growth will certainly have personal benefit but will also benefit the people we are then able to go out and support.
