A degree in a classical subject offers a rich and versatile training. It will help you to develop advanced skills in critical analysis, communication and creative thinking. This course lets you pursue your interest in the languages, literature and thought of ancient Greece and Rome, while considering the broader cultural, social and political contexts of the ancient Mediterranean world. You will spend your third year studying abroad at one of our partner universities.

You will study a broad range of literary and non-literary sources, which are taught in innovative and dynamic ways by staff engaged in ground-breaking research.
You will study Latin alongside a modern European language (current options are Italian and German) and will spend your third year studying classical subjects at one of our partner universities in Europe.
Currently, placements are available in Italy (Bologna, Padua, Rome and Venice) and in Germany (Berlin and Tübingen). Confirmation of available placements will be made in your second year.

Scotland Advanced Highers
AA in two Advanced Highers. You will need a foreign language (modern or ancient) at Advanced Higher grade B, Higher grade B, or National 5 grade A, and ABB/BBB in three further Highers subjects.
AB in two Advanced Highers. You will need a foreign language (modern or ancient) at Advanced Higher grade B, Higher grade B, or National 5 grade A, and AAB in three further Highers subjects.
Welsh Baccalaureate
ABB in three subjects at A level. You will need a foreign language (modern or ancient) at A Level grade B or GCSE grade A or grade 7, plus grade C in the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales.
Access to Higher Education Diplomas
We will consider applicants returning to study who are presenting a QAA-recognised Access to Higher Education Diploma on a case-by-case basis.
Typically, we require 45 Credits at Level 3, including Distinction in 33 Level 3 credits and Merit in 12 Level 3 Credits. We may require subject specific credits or an A level to be studied alongside the Access to Higher Education Diploma to fulfil essential subject requirements.

Warwick may make differential offers to students in certain circumstances, such as those who have participated in a Widening Participation programme or who meet the University’s contextual data criteria. These offers are usually one or two grades below Warwick’s standard offer.
Do you offer foundation programmes?

Yes, Warwick welcomes applications for deferred (gap year) entry.
Will I need to interview for this course?
Warwick does not typically interview applicants. Offers are made based on the UCAS application, including predicted and achieved grades, the personal statement, and the school reference.
In your first year, you will take core modules in Latin Language 1 and 2 OR Latin Literary Texts and a modern European language (currently Italian or German), alongside a choice of optional modules.
In your second year, you will continue with your modern language alongside a module focussing on Latin language and literature (either optional core or Latin Literary Texts) and further optional Classics modules.
You will spend your third year studying classical subjects at one of our partner universities in Europe.
You will return for your final year at Warwick.

Year 1
In your first year, you take a core module in Latin language, either Latin Language 1 and 2 (intensive beginners' course) or Latin Literary Texts (post A-level) as well as a modern European language. You will also have a choice of optional modules studying texts, material culture, society or ancient thought.
Year 2
Optional core modules, Latin text-based module (for students who took Latin Literary Texts in Year One) or Latin Literary Texts (for students who took Latin 1 and 2 in Year One), and continuation of a Modern European Language.
Second and final year students may take one 30-CAT module or two 15-CAT modules from outside the department (e.g., from the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning or another academic department) in place of an optional module.
Year 3
You will spend your third year studying classical subjects at one of our partner universities in Europe.
Year 4
Latin text-based module and continuation of a Modern European Language.

Tuition fee

On 26 November 2025, the UK government announced that the tuition fee cap for UK undergraduate students for the 2026-27 academic year would increase to £9,790 from the 2025-26 rate of at £9,535.
Students who qualify for government-regulated fees are classed as ‘Home’ students for fees purposes. In future years, fees for continuing students may be subject to an increase in fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government (if permitted by law or government policy).
We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. If you receive an offer, your fee status will be clearly stated alongside the tuition fee information.

You will repay your loan or loans gradually once you are working and earning above a certain amount. For students starting their course after 1 August 2023 (on Student Finance England’s Plan 5), you will repay when your income is over £25,000 a year.
Repayments will be taken directly from your salary if you are an employee. If your income falls below the earnings threshold or you stop working, your repayments will stop until your income goes back up above this figure.

If you are an overseas student enrolling in 2026-27, your annual tuition fees will be as follows:
Band 1 – £27,870 per year (classroom-based courses, including Humanities and most Social Science courses)

Teaching and learning
You will study Classics in a variety of ways, through lectures, seminars, and language classes. In your final year you will write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice, with guidance from your departmental supervisor.
Class sizes vary from 6 to 80. Honours modules are capped at 55 (subject to annual adjustment change).
You will take four modules or the equivalent in credits per term, each with 2-3 contact hours per week (more for your language module/s).
You will take 120 CATS each year (through a combination of 15 CAT (half year) and 30 CAT (full year) modules). Assessment methods include coursework submitted during the year (e.g., essays, blog posts, video-essays, learning logs) and exams in the summer (100% exams for language modules).
Your second and final years contribute equally to your final degree classification.
