Course overview

Economics is the study of choice, investigating the decisions of consumers and firms, groups and governments, networks and nations. It plays a part in every aspect of life, using scientific methods to develop theoretical models of behaviour and testing intuition with empirical analysis of markets, institutions and public policy. Our teaching is research-led, meaning you will be learning from some of the world’s leading researchers in their field.

Five students having a friendly discussion

This comprehensive degree will develop your skills in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.

It will teach you to abstract and simplify economic problems, both empirically and theoretically, developing a deep knowledge of global and local economic trends, institutions and policies. The degree focuses on research-led teaching and so we will expose you to research from the very start and will encourage you to consider your own research questions.

The flexible degree structure means that you can choose from many optional modules either from within or outside of the Department of Economics. These optional modules might include modules offered by: Warwick Business School, Politics, Philosophy, Computer Science, Languages and many more.

Entry requirements

General entry requirements

Applications to our Economics degrees are assessed primarily on the basis of the applicant’s predicted/current grades and past academic record.

Optionally, applicants are encouraged to sit the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA).

TMUA scores may be used as a factor in determining which applicants receive an offer for Economics L100. Applicants achieving the highest scores in the TMUA will be considered for a reduced offer of AAA. The required level in TMUA will be set once all scores have been received and will not be published.

Applicants without TMUA will still be considered.

Contextual offers do not require TMUA.

For further details including test dates and how to register for TMUA, please see the TMUA at Warwick webpage.

Modules

The first year consists of five core modules and up to two optional modules. The second year includes three core modules and up to two options. The third year comprises one of two optional core modules, focusing on research in economics, and gives you the opportunity to undertake a final-year project and to bring together and consolidate your overall learning in your degree course. You will also study up to seven options, enabling you to explore topics that particularly interest you.

Within your course regulations, we will permit you to choose optional modules from any Department in the University subject to department approval.

The final degree classification is determined by your second- and final-year marks and each contributes 50%.

Note that the module catalogue is subject to change for future years of study, as we evolve our courses in response to the latest developments in academia and industry. If optional modules are listed below, these can vary from year to year.

Plus, up to two optional modules.
