My Teaching

Current Teaching

During the academic years 2013 - 2015, I teach in the Literature and Psychoanalysis module, EN335. This module, convened by John Fletcher, explores the development of psychoanalysis and its role as a literary theory. The course reads many of the central psychoanalytic books and essays alongside literary texts such as Oedipus Rex, Hamlet and The Tales of Hoffmann.

I teach and lecture in the Modern World Literatures module, EN123. I deliver the lecture on Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder in the 5th week of Term 2 of the module. The lecture can be listened to here, under Term 2, Feb 4: Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder. The module explores central texts in world literature from 1789 to the present. Set texts include:

I teach on the module EN358: Shakespeare, Freud and the Power of Scenes. This module, convened by John Fletcher, explores a selelction of Shakespeare's plays through psychoanalytic literary criticism, specifically Fletcher's theory of trauamtic sceneography.

I teach on the Masters Module Shakespeare in History, EN935. The central purpose of this module is to encourage students to combine detailed critical response to particular texts with a sense of the dynamic relations between literature and history. The first half of the term considers Shakespeare in relation to the history of his own time, the second half his place in later histories. This module explores the dialectical relationship between Shakespeare's plays and the development of intellectual history including literary criticism and Critical Theory.
