Warwick University History Department PhD student, Hannah Graves, has been awarded a prestigious Dissertation Fellowship for 2015/16 at the Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas at Austin.

Warwick History Department graduate student Anna Bruzzone will deliver a lecture on 21st May 2015 in Nairobe as part of the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) Nairobi Seminar Series, entitled 'The making of the Somalia-Kenya borderlands: boundary politics, trade and the emergence of colonial regimes of territorialisation (1925-1930)'.

Dr David Lambert of the Warwick University History Department gave a public talk on Tuesday 5 May at gallery@oxo on London's Southbank as part of the 'Jamaica Hidden Histories' exhibition. He spoke about the anthropologist and geographer, Harry Johnston (1857-1926), whose early 20th-century photographs of the Caribbean form part of the exhibition. The originals are held at the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of Geographers) in South Kensington. 'Jamaica Hidden Histories' runs until 17 May, before it moves to The Drum arts centre in Birmingham from 25 June.

The Warwick University History Department is saddened to report the death of former student Mary Legge, who passed away peacefully on 29th March 2015 at Cransley Hospice in Kettering. Mary was a mature part-time student at Warwick for many years, completing her BA in Historical Studies from 2000 to 2006, and completing an MA in History from 2006 to 2008. Mary was a great role model and inspiration to her fellow part-time students, always interested, supportive, and ready to engage with whatever activities were taking place, and she will be remembered fondly.

Dr Anne Gerritsen of the Warwick University History Department will appear on BBC Radio 4's In Our Time at 9am on Thursday 16th April 2015 to discuss Matteo Ricci and the Ming Dynasty:

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the life of Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit priest who in the 16th century led a Christian mission to China. An accomplished scholar, Ricci travelled extensively and came into contact with senior officials of the Ming Dynasty administration. His story is one of the most important encounters between Renaissance Europe and a China which was still virtually closed to outsiders. With Mary Laven (Reader in Early Modern History at the University of Cambridge), Craig Clunas (Professor of the History of Art at the University of Oxford), and Anne Gerritsen (Reader in History at the University of Warwick).

Dr Elodie Duché, ​Alan Pearsall postdoctoral fellow at IHR University of London and Associate Research Fellow at the Warwick University History Department, has been awarded a British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS) Fellowship to visit the University of York for a week in late April.

During Dr Elodie Duché's time at the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies at York she will organise a workshop on the visual cultures of modern warfare and work with scholars and students of various disciplines to develop her research on the visual and material cultures of Napoleonic prisoners of war. She will also take part in the series of events organised by Dr Catriona Kennedy to mark the anniversary of Waterloo, in partnership with the National Army Museum.
