The Wheeler History of Travel Writing PhD Scholarship - 2024-25 entry

As part of the newly established Wheeler History of Travel Writing Programme, the Department of History is inviting applications for up to two PhD studentships, starting in October 2024, in the History of Travel and Travel Writing. The remaining PhD studentships will be available from 2025 onwards.

The programme seeks to attract talented researchers whose projects may focus on any period or region of the world. Candidates who adopt a global historical perspective and have the ability to work with sources in more than one language are particularly encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: Candidates can be of any nationality and must apply for a History PhD at the University of Warwick to begin in Autumn 2024.

Successful applicants will benefit from the wide-ranging expertise represented by Warwick’s Department of History and its Global History and Culture Centre as well as the range of training and development opportunities offered by the Department and Doctoral College. Candidates are encouraged to explain how their proposal fits within the department’s existing research profile.

Dr James Poskett wins the 2023 Jerry Bentley Prize in World History

Horizons: A Global History of Science (Penguin, 2022) by Dr James Poskett, Associate Professor of the History of Science, has been awarded the 2023 Jerry Bentley Prize from the American Historical Association, which is for "the most outstanding book on world history".

Previous winners include Professor Priya Satia (Stanford), Professor Adam Clulow (UT Austin), and Professor Erika Rappaport (UC Santa Barbra).

Applications for Leverhulme Early Careers Fellowships for 2024/2025 entry now open

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Warwick encourages outstanding postdoctoral scholars to apply for the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships scheme, for Fellowships hosted at Warwick starting in the 2024/2025 academic year. Please note that initial applications/expressions of interest need to be sent to Alan Ashton-Smith, the Research and Strategy Manager for the Faculty of Arts (Alan.Ashton-Smith@warwick.ac.uk) by 5pm Thursday 30 November 2023 containing the following information:

  • A short description of the proposed project (maximum 2 A4 pages)
  • A copy of the applicant's CV (maximum 2 A4 pages)
  • The name of an academic in their proposed host Department or School. Candidates should contact their prospective mentor in advance of submitting an Expression of Interest.
  • The names of three referees. Please note that referees will not be asked to provide a statement at this stage.

Global History Prize dissertation 2021-22 published

The International History Review journal has published an article by History alumnus Sam Matthews Boehmer, winner of the Global History Prize dissertation from 2021-22.
