A Widening Participation programme designed to inspire students about history in school!

What is Hidden Histories?

Hidden Histories is all about providing greater connection between schools in the local area and students as part of the History Department’s widening participation.
Both students in higher education as well as children in local primary and secondary schools have a passion for history and therefore Hidden Histories exists as a chance to get to share this passion. Utilising after school history clubs as a place to connect, the scheme offers students the chance to learn how to develop a curriculum and teach lessons to children who are equally as excited about history as they are.

Past student experiences:

-For me Hidden Histories was a great opportunity to get to both develop my teaching and planning skills as well as spend time in the local area. I really found it a rewarding experience that let me share my love for history with others!’

-‘It’s a great opportunity to meet people on your course who you might never interact with otherwise’

-‘It’s a great experience, even if you don’t want to get into teaching: collaborating with your group and delivering lessons in schools is very rewarding.’

Practical information:

We help train students to be able to teach in a way that meets various areas and that is age appropriate for the environment that they are going into.

For schools wanting to get involved they should email our departmental representative for more information or to answer any questions.

For students wanting to get involved, we generally recruit and train you in term 1. While it is possible to get involved later into the year, going into the schools is not guaranteed unless the training is completed.
