Servants, Society and the State
Servants, Society and the State. The Making of the Social in England, 1760-1820 led by Professor Carolyn Steedman is an ESRC funded Professorial Fellowship Award.
The project will propose a new methodology for researching the history of social theory, in which key propositions of the emerging fiscal-military state are seen to be embodied in real and represented domestic servants in 18th century England. At the same time, by considering a social and economic history of service and servitude in England, to provide a new account of class and class formation in England's transition to modernity.
