Overview

Sport is a global phenomenon which lends itself to study from a global perspective. There are numerous ways in which sport both impacts and is shaped by society, including existing structures of class, race and gender. Sport has often been disseminated around the world via imperialism and has subsequently been an important factor in nation-building and decolonisation. Sport is also big business, closely related to the media in many parts of the world and has become interwoven with political issues and identities.

This module allows students to study the history of sport in an interdisciplinary manner, with flexibility in the curriculum on what is studied and assessed. Cricket and football will be a major focus, but there will be opportunities to explore other sports as well.
