Week 11: The Indian Uprising of 1857

This week will focus on the events of 1857. Whilst the lecture will lay out the overarching chronology, the seminar will give students the chance to zoom in on the key events of the uprising, and to assess how it fits into their existing understandings of resistance.

Seminar Questions:

1) Why did people take part in the Indian Uprising?

2) How did the British respond to the Uprising? What strategies were used to suppress the Uprising?

3) How did the Indian Uprising evolve over the course of 1857?

4) How was the Uprising portrayed in the metropole?

4) How do we account for events such as those at Kanpur in histories of resistance?
