Week 11: 1857 - Resistance from Below?
Shifting from the more militarised and official narratives of the previous week, this week uses the approach of scholars from the school of Subaltern Studies to interrogate the ‘mutiny at the margins’ (Crispin Bates). We will focus particularly on Dalit and Muslim experiences of the Uprising.
Seminar Questions
1) Why is the binary between coloniser and colonised unhelpful when examining the Indian Uprising? How helpful is the concept of 'loyalists' in understanding events?
2) How did caste shape experiences of the Indian Uprising?
3) How did Muslim and Hindu experiences of the Uprising differ?
