Week 12: 1857 - Counter-Insurgency and Martial Law

This week will focus on the British suppression of the Uprising. In particular, we will examine the way historians of the body have revitalised understandings of the British response to the Uprising in recent years, and how the 1857 mutiny fits into broader chronologies of insurgency and counter-insurgency in the British Empire.

Seminar Questions:

1) How did British residents in India respond to the Uprising?

2) How significant were rumours and anxiety about violence?

3) How was the Uprising portrayed in the metropole?

4) What strategies were used to suppress the Uprising?

5) How have historians of punishment contributed to understandings of the Indian Uprising?
